Baily's Tragedy

The week before Halloween James was outside working and noticed the dogs were on the other side of our fence and were barking at a wood pile. He yelled and yelled at them to come back. They wouldn't come. So James got in the car to go around and get them but before he got out he noticed two of them coming back. Baily wasn't with them. So James walked to the fence to see where she was. He found her on the other side of the fence all bloody. She scooted under the fence and James brought her to the house and started cleaning her up but she just kept bleeding. We thought maybe she had been bit by a snake or something. She was in pretty bad shape so James took her to the vet who also thought she had been bit by a snake and they sent her too the Animal Emergency Center. They gave her an IV and started fluids and wanted to give her antivenom because they also thought she had been bit by a snake. They did some blood tests first and swabbed her wounds and her blood work was fine and her wounds came back clean of any venom so they held off on the antivenom. Well the night vet started looking and feeling her wounds a little closer and realized there were some hard things under her skin. So they did an x-ray and she wasn't bit by a snake she had been shot and had a lot of pellets in her and a fractured leg. They kept her over night and we brought her home the next morning with antibiotics and pain meds.We were trying to figure out who would of shot her and the dogs where over by a neighbor's so James went over to talk to him (we had never met him) and see if he knew anything. Well it turns out that neighbor is the one who shot her with a shot gun. He said the dogs had been on his property before barking at his cows and chickens and he had fired a shot before just to scare them. Well this time he shot to kill and Baily was the closest one. He said he shot her once and she went down and looked like she was in pretty bad shape so he was going to shoot her again to "finish her off". Well, his gun kept jamming and he couldn't get it reloaded so before he could shoot her again she got up and ran off and that is when James found her. It still makes me sick to think that someone would shoot our little dog. Once a week we had to take Baily in to get her splint redone and for Halloween they gave her a little jack-o-lantern. It was so cute. Baily is doing a lot better. She just got her splint off a few days ago and still walks with a limp. She is still full of lead but we can't do anything about that. I'm just glad she is alive!
